Marking the beginning of their journey to their first studio album, Genevieve &

Milo announce their beautiful new single ‘Birds’

“Navigating a period of immense change, ‘Birds’ was born in the quiet company of

friends. A few years ago I reached a point of feeling very stuck and restricted in my voice.

Something that had been a source of freedom and self discovery had slowly turned into

something very serious and controlled. I needed a new mentor, someone to help guide

me back to the space of freedom I knew so well with singing.

Many mornings I would sit outside as the day began, and listen to the symphony of

different birds that were living in my home area of Cape Town. From the tiniest Cape

Robins to the majestic Harrier hawks. I was at ease in the music of my mountain home. I

began to listen deeper and deeper to the layers of bird song. What at first sounds like a

chaos of sound has so many intricate layers of melody. I started to mimic the individual

bird songs and get to know some of the birds and their particular calls. They became myteachers. Their voices were small but could reach through the valley. They were

uninhibited in their performance, completely free in every song they sang.

These mornings of bird song study slowly guided me back to my own voice and by

extension a greater sense of ease in myself. I wanted to write a song to acknowledge these teachers.

‘Birds’ is a reminder to allow myself more ease and grace in this life. To let myself be moved by the currents without seizing up in fear. It’s a reminder to find sanctuary in the forces of the natural world and be guided by them. The natural world has so many lessons for us if we are open to receiving them. ‘Birds’ encapsulates so much of my journey and pays homage to the

nature spirits that have guided me so deeply on my path. It is a great joy to share this

song with you all now.

“The words and tones of the song immediately stirred a deep emotional rumbling within

me. This feeling of movement or taking off, and this powerful meditative trance-like state

of being that the song puts me in when I’m playing it, captured through deeper drums

and lighter percussive elements. It was an effortless composition of elements and

sounds, like flying, it just came through and felt immediately fully formed, ready to

spread its wings.
