“This song was born during a period of isolation, wintering alone at home. The community that had surrounded me during the joyful summer months had dispersed and I found myself in the cold and quiet for many weeks.

During those weeks I found great solace in the sound of rain, and the subsequent blooming of greenery all around me. Cape Town experiences a lot of winter rain, which nourishes the usually dry earth. The mountains explode with lush green and rivers rush with renewed glee. It was strange to witness the contrast of my internal world, barren and quiet and the magnificent, exploding natural world. 

In that period of loneliness I found a deep sense of belonging in that nature, holding me through the quiet. While periods of deep loneliness are inevitably difficult, it was a time that strengthened my sense of belonging, not just to my human family but also my innate connection with the natural places I move through.
